How Many Gods are there? One or Many?

cf. Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10; 44:6, 8 and Genesis 1:26; 3:22; 11:7; 1 Cor. 8:5; I John 5:8

One God
"Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!" (Deuteronomy 6:4)
". . . Before Me [YHWH] there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me" (Isaiah 43:10).
". . . there is no God besides Me" (Isaiah 44:6).
". . . And you are My witnesses. Is there any God besides Me, or is there any other Rock? I know of none" (Isaiah 44:8).

Many gods
"Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness . . . '"(Genesis 1:26).
"And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil . . ." (Genesis 3:22).
"Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other" (Genesis 11:7).
"For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth [as indeed there are many 'gods' and many 'lords']" (1 Corinthians 8:5).
"For there are three that bear witness, the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement" (1 John 5:8).

The Bible tells us that there is only one God in all existence (Isaiah 43:10; 44:6, 8). However, it also mentions "other gods." For example there is Adrammelech and Anammelech (2 Kings 17:31), Asherah (1 Kings 18:19), Baal (Judges 3:7), Chemosh (Num. 21:29), Dagon (1 Sam. 5:2), Molech (Lev. 18:21; 20:2-5), etc.

The Bible is not contradicting itself. When the Bible speaks of other gods, it is speaking of false gods that have no true existence.

Gal. 4:8 says,
"Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods."
See also, Isaiah 37:19 and Jeremiah 2:11.

God tells us that he alone is the true God, and that all of the invented gods of man do not exist except in their own minds. So, we can see that the Bible is not contradicting itself regarding how many gods there are in existence. There is only one.

Note: in the verses in Genesis that have God saying "Let us make . . . , Let us go down . . . , etc.", are clues to the Trinitarian nature of God. God is a Trinity of persons: a Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. There are not three Gods--but one. There are those who insist that the Trinity is polytheistic. But it is not. Trinitarians believe in a single being who is God.

Can Death be Abolished?

There is no doubt that life expectancy is higher than a century ago. There are now 14,000 centenarians in Britain, and according to the Office of National Statistics, one in three of today’s babies will live to see their 100th birthday. Some scientists and medical experts are even claiming that ageing could be delayed indefinitely.

British doctor Dr Aubrey de Grey believes people who have already been born could live for ten centuries because of ongoing research being done into “repairing the effects of ageing”. He hopes ultimately to create treatments that mean death could be postponed by constantly repairing our bodies, so that we can live as long as 1,000 years or possibly even forever. Dr de Grey founded the aptly-named Methuselah Foundation. Its website states that, “By advancing tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, we want to create a world where 90-year olds can be as healthy as 50-year olds—by 2030.” Helping people to live a long, healthy life is a laudable aim, but for Christians, the idea of living forever in our fallen world is not very attractive—we look forward instead to the perfections of a new heaven and new earth (Revelation 21:1–5). Plus, it doesn’t solve all forms of death—anti-ageing treatments could forestall (not cure) some types of death but could never prevent death by such things as explosion or plane crash.

Although death is a physical thing, the reason for death is spiritual, as the Bible makes clear.

Those who are attempting to conquer death are 2,000 years behind! As Paul again wrote, “our Saviour Christ Jesus [has] abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10). This includes new resurrection bodies for all believers in the future (1 Corinthians 15:42–44; Philippians 3:20–21)—how much better than the vain hope of ‘conquering’ death by science (e.g cryonics)!

What is Heresy?

Heresy is often defined as any departure from Christian orthodoxy, from a misuse of scripture taken from the context that changes its meaning and application. It is a teaching, doctrine or practice that goes beyond the apostles’ teachings, (what is written) or introduces something totally new or contrary to the Scripture.

It is also a term that people refuse to use today to identify false teaching and teachers.

Biblical heresy is often a denial of one or more of the core beliefs held by the Church that are found in the Bible. Such as the Triunity of God, the deity of Christ or salvation by grace alone through faith in Christ alone. There is also heresy that is not biblically based, introducing other religious spiritual teachings to add to what the Scripture says.

We have all heard the statement “eat the meat and spit out the bones,” but only the mature believer can discern good from evil. What parent would feed a little child a fish with bones and expect it to know what to do. This is not a good answer for the newborn, weak or immature in faith. Young lambs, like a young child, do not understand the differences, and will be destroyed if not protected. This is why we are to identify certain people who are expounding these heresies, we prevent the lambs from immediate harm.

If we are to keep unity we are to contend for “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).

Has the Great Falling Away from the Faith Begun? – Part 1

There have always been passionate preachers who warned of the approaching apocalypse and denounced the corruption of society. What is different today?

The Bible speaks repeatedly of “falling away.” Sometimes the word “apostasy” is used, meaning rebellion or turning away from something that you had believed in.

In the Old Testament, terms such as “backsliding” appear (Jer 2:19; 5:6; 8:5; 14:7; Hos 11:7). When it came to apostasy in Israel, it was a turning away from the Word of God, from His will, and from His presence. This has always been associated with idolatry, immorality, social injustice, egoism, and sooner or later the judgment of God. Among other things, Daniel uses this word for the time of the Antichrist:
“With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant (apostatized), but the people who know their God will firmly resist him” (Dan. 11:32 [NIV]).

In the New Testament, we find various passages that speak of apostasy from divine truths.

The first to speak of apostasy in the end times was the Lord Jesus Himself. He prophesied that in a coming time of tribulation this would be seen in a particular way,
“At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people” (Matt 24:10-11).

The same word is used in the parable of the sower and the four soils. From the seed that falls in stony places, it says:
“But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away” (Matt 13:21).

Although the Word of God has had some effect on them, they fall away as soon as there are problems.

The Lord Jesus called deception one of the most important end-time signs before His coming in glory. It is the only sign that is repeated three times in Matthew 24 (verses 4-5, 11, 23-26). And, although the culmination of the seduction will come in the last great tribulation period, we already see the harbingers of it.

LGBT Activists Next Target: Charitable Status of Churches

Over the past decade, attacks on Canada's Christian communities by LGBT activists have escalated significantly.

In Alberta, Education Minister David Eggen is threatening to defund and possibly shut down religious schools that do not accept Gay-Straight alliance clubs. Canada's Supreme Court recently ruled against Trinity Western University, a private Christian institution in British Columbia, for having students agree to a lifestyle contract upon enrollment.

And of course, attempts to force schools to teach gender ideology are taking place simultaneously in nearly every province across the country.

I've seen many Canadian Christians post articles describing these events on social media, often accompanied by the million dollar question: "What's next?"

I suspect that I've known the answer to that question for some time, but recent events in Ontario indicate that it could happen sooner than I'd thought. The potential catalyst is a story that has been reported on breathlessly by Canadian media for just over a week now.

Liberal Churches: Compromised & Infiltrated

As liberal churches began to permit same-sex relationships, take steps towards the ordination of gay clergy, and make approving noises concerning gay marriage, gay activists were able to send a loud message to a culture that was awaiting the Christian response.

They could effectively push to the fringe orthodox Christian denominations who held to 2,000 years of Christian teaching on sexuality, while declaring that the liberal denominations, (those who endorsed love in all its forms) were the true representatives of Christianity in the West.

That is why orthodox Christians who despise homophobia have found themselves consistently lumped in with the hatemongering Westboro Baptists--because the gay liberation movement has, through the careful cultivation of alliances with post-Christian churches, redefined for many in the culture at large what it means to be a Christian.

Adhering to orthodoxy is no longer important, they say. Not judging the actions of your neighbors, however, is paramount: Judge not, except when you are judging those you find judgmental.

What is Doctrine?

The ancient Greek word translated as "doctrine" at its root means, "instruction, especially as it applies to lifestyle application." In the Bible, the word doctrine is specifically used to refer to spiritual topics and areas of study. Essentially, doctrine is teaching that is shared by a scholarly or definitive source. The Bible itself is profitable for doctrine (2 Timothy 3:16–17).

As Christians, we are supposed to keep a close watch on our doctrine (1 Timothy 4:16). Biblical doctrine instructs us in godly living, and the spiritual gifts given to us and others in the body of Christ enable us to stay on the right course: "so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ" (Ephesians 4:14–15).

Biblical doctrine informs our knowledge of God's will. It enables us to better understand:

• The path of salvation (Ephesians 2:1–10; Romans 10:9–10)

• Instructions for the church (1 Corinthians 14:26, 40; Titus 2:1–10; 1 Timothy 3:1–13)

• Holy living (1 Peter 1:14–17; 1 Corinthians 6:18–20)

• The nature and character of God (Psalm 90:2; 97:2; 103:8; John 4:24)

God's Word is the foundation for all Christian doctrine. Second Timothy 3:16–17 tells us:
"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work" (see also 2 Peter 1:20–21).

There can be differences in the church over secondary doctrinal topics, such as church government or eschatology, but all biblical doctrine should incorporate and be based on the whole Bible or counsel of God (Acts 20:27) and on the unchanging character of God (Hebrews 13:8; Numbers 23:19).

Demon Possession: Plain and Simple

Demon possession is something we read a lot about in the Gospels, hear about from the mission field, but have very little experience with in the Western world. In this episode of Ask the Theologian, Dr. Randy White uses Luke 8 and the story of the Gerasene Demoniac to discuss demon possession and, perhaps even more importantly, demon position. You will learn how to recognize demon possession, and you will find great comfort in knowing the real demon position.

This teaching seeks to avoid sensationalism and “making stuff up.” Rather, it looks into the real experiences of the Scripture and uses these records as sufficient to equip the believer to understand demon possession and position.

Spiritual Deception of the Progressives

There was a time when ideas like yoga or eastern meditation in the church were only associated with Christ Science churches, Universalist Churches, and a few spurious non-biblical fringe places. In a few scant decades, the walls have been so completely torn down that we not only see no harm in these things, we promote them. This is exactly what Theosophist (Luciferian) leader Alice Bailey predicted would be part of the new age infiltration into the church.

So, in fact, this has been underway for some time. It probably began to get a real foothold in our present time with Norman Vincent Peale’s “Power of Positive Thinking” theology, quickly adapted by Rev. Robert Schuller who was really the first modern “megachurch” and “Seeker Friendly” church pastor. Their ideas were once considered a bit of an aberration from mainstream Christian doctrine. But here we are decades later, and seeker friendly and power of positive thinking is normal and unchallenged. The crack into Bible-based evangelical churches had begun to open just a little.

God help us to turn away from the slow poisoning of the church through breath-prayers, eastern meditation, mindfulness, yoga, etc. God help us to surrender our soulish ways of perceiving God based on a book that was written by a wounded man, William Paul Young – unhealed from abuse and bitter church hurts – whom those seeking to make a profit have promoted regardless of his spiritual fragility and woundedness – who rejected the God of the Bible for a god who would somehow ease his pain – one that eases your pain as it kills your soul. The Shack is the spiritual Jack Kavorkian of our age.

Pray for William Paul Young, that God would pull him out of this most dangerous and deadly strange fire.

Pray for the multitudes who are believing lies. And may God deal with those mercenaries and moneychangers who care more about what sells and profits them then about the care and protection of the flock of God.

Alice Bailey’s plans are about to come to full fruition. The greatest lie is just around the corner.

Four Progressive Steps into Apostasy

Throughout the 2000 year history of the Church, we have seen a continual departure of people and churches from the faith of the apostles. As incredibly tragic as this has been, it should not surprise us because Paul warned: “The Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons” (1 Tim. 4:1). Shortly after our Lord began building His Church, the apostle John records one of the first occurrences of apostasy. “They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us” (1 John 2:19). Since then, many other professing Christians, churches, denominations, and seminaries, who once upheld the truth and authority of God’s Word, have drifted into apostasy. One of the interesting characteristics of apostasy is that it does not happen overnight. It actually develops over a period of time through a process that can be categorized into four steps.
First Step into Apostasy

God’s word is neglected as the supreme authority for faith and practice.

Second Step into Apostasy

Scripture is twisted and distorted for self-serving agendas.

Third Step into Apostasy

Entertainment, idolatry, liturgy and rituals have replaced the Lord Jesus from the central focus of worship.

Fourth Step into Apostasy

Teaching is heavily influenced by doctrines of demons. Jesus has been removed from the church.

What We Know

There is much we don't know about God's timing for end-time events simply because we won't know until they happen. We have what the Bible says and we take that information and use that as a lens by which we view current events through, which is known as exegesis. The reverse of this tries to fit current events into the pages of the Bible, which is known as eisegesis. In other words, they are assuming a correlation and implying that xyz must mean this passage, because of abc. That is what we should avoid at all cost from doing. What we do know, is that God's word is sure, and it will come to pass on God's time.

Long ago, pastors, priests, teachers, and theologians realized a convenient trick that if you don't understand something, or it doesn't fit your agenda, you can simply make it allegorical, or spiritual, and relegate it to the "pie in the sky" section of their mental filing cabinets. Out of sight, out of mind right?

We have to go with what we know, and then, use Scripture to interpret what we see in the here and now...not the other way around. My intent here is to simply go with what we actually know and what we can know with a high degree of certainty. Some of these events are yet future, but we can simply look around today and see things are unfolding exactly, as God's word said it would and follow those to their logical and scriptural conclusions.

Tribulation Saints and ‘The Mark’

by Jack Kinsella

I received an email from a member asking, “Upon what grounds will a believer be saved during the Tribulation Period?” It was an intriguing question, one that we’ve not touched upon in any great detail in previous discussions.

My correspondent framed his question around the acceptance of the Mark of the Beast and a ‘paradox’ he sees facing those who might accept it under coercion.

Specifically, he asked,
“During the Tribulation, if a “believer” is threatened with the choice between either taking the Mark upon himself, or becoming “responsible” for a horrendous evil act otherwise aimed upon their child, doesn’t a feasible scenario present itself whereby a believer may choose to take the Mark. How can these two apparent “truths” occur coincidentally, and form a contradiction?”

The Mark of the Beast is not merely an economic medium of exchange, like a debit or credit card, although it will incorporate that function. If that were all there was to it, my correspondent’s paradox would be valid.

The Mark of the Beast is first and foremost a worship system. So now, we have crossed over from the material to the spiritual.

The second question asks, “Upon what grounds will a believer be saved during the Tribulation?” The short answer would appear to be, “the same grounds upon which believers are saved during the Church Age” — salvation by grace through faith. But that isn’t exactly accurate.

During the Tribulation, God’s grace, as we understand it in this Dispensation, is withdrawn. The Age of Grace concludes with the Rapture. The Tribulation Period is the final, unfulfilled week of the Age of the Law.

Jesus described the tribulation as, “such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”

He warned that, “except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened” (Matthew 24:21-22).

It is our job on this side of the Tribulation to give the warning of what is to come. It is coming. And it is coming soon.

Our blessed hope is found in the Scripture’s promise that Jesus comes for His Church first.

“Wherefore, comfort one another with these words” (1st Thessalonians 4:18).

Scientist Proposes Cannibalism to “Save the Climate”

The Stockholm fair recently held a “Gastro Summit” event which discussed the “future of food”. And the future of food sounds terrible. Indeed, the summit featured a seminar led by Stockholm School of Economics professor Magnus Soderlund titled “Can You Imagine Eating Human Flesh?” where cannibalism was promoted to fight climate change, greenhouse emissions, and to encourage sustainability. Some of the topics addressed during the seminar were “Is Cannibalism the solution to food sustainability in the future?” and “Are we humans too selfish to live sustainably?”

On the Swedish television channel TV4, Soderlund stated that climate change will ultimately force people to “try foods they currently wouldn’t think of eating” such as pets, insects, and human flesh. To truly take on the effects of climate change, Soderlund states that we must “awake the idea” of eating human flesh and that it should be discussed as an option in the future.

While he believes that cannibalism is the “future of food”, he is aware that work needs to be done to address the “widespread taboo” against cannibalism and the “conservative attitudes” of the masses.

Soderlund believes that people are not cannibals due to “selfishness”. However, as an expert in behavior, he thinks that people can ultimately be “tricked” into “making the right decisions”. According to him, if people were gradually be exposed to cannibalism, the idea could become mainstream.

LGBT Affirming Churches Add Glitter to Ash Wednesday

Last month it was the Anglicans who chose to "queer the liturgy" of evening prayer in honor LGBT history month by renaming the Holy Spirit "The Fantabulosa Fairy" and God the Father became "the Dutchess".

Not to be outdone, Catholic LGBT supporters and numerous left leaning protestant churches throughout the United States and Canada intend to show their support by wearing "glitter ash" on their foreheads to mark Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a period that extends until Easter Sunday where Catholics and some Protestants ceremoniously place plain gray ashes on their foreheads, often in the formation of a cross, to spread a message of repentance and change which often involve fasting, moderation and self-denial.

A New York-based advocacy group called Parity however, is asking Christians who favor LGBT equality -- "queer positive Christians," as they call them -- to show support by wearing "glitter ash" on their foreheads.

Archaeologists Discover Massive 4,000-Year-Old Bomb Crater at Site of Sodom and Gomorrah Destruction

By Geoffrey Grider

According to the Bible, the ancient cities, thought to have been located on the Dead Sea, were wiped away by God for the sinful behaviour of their people. The preliminary findings of US scientists suggest that this region witnessed a major calamity almost 4 thousand years ago, which left it uninhabited for centuries.

God looks down on man’s nuclear weapons, and I believe He laughs at our puny attempts at warfare. He has things in His arsenal that make our most powerful nukes look like firecrackers. We first read about these weapons in the 38th chapter of the book of Job. The weather is the strongest weapon that has ever been created, and there is no defense against it. Think about that the next time your ‘small talk‘ revolves around the weather, no small matter there.

“But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly. Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground” (Genesis 13:13, 19:24,25 [KJV]).

Contrary to modern-day Laodicean revisionists, the twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of unrepentant homosexual behaviour. This was the place where the original LGBTQ lifestyle was founded, and when God pronounced judgement on it in a fiery blast from above, Sodom and Gomorrah ceased to exist. That area today, as you see in the photo, resembles a bomb blast crater after an horrific explosion has taken place. It remains uninhabited to this day.

Sleep Paralysis

Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which people, either upon falling asleep or awakening, temporarily experience the inability to move, and it is often associated with terrifying sensations.

Sleep paralysis is known by many names across the world including "Old Hag Syndrome" in the west. Some claims it is caused by "Shadow People," "Hat Man," or various evil spiritual beings like demons. Some but not all cases of "alien abductions" or incubus and succubus attacks (spiritual rape) can be chalked up to a severe sleep paralysis episode.

The author of this book claims to know how to do something that most sleep scientists say is impossible: to stop sleep paralysis for good.

Chris White has helped thousands of people stop sleep paralysis through his nonprofit websites and videos, and has conducted one of the largest surveys ever done on the subject. This book is intended to be an overview of what sleep paralysis is, what causes it, and a detailed explanation of how to stop it. It also contains many personal accounts from people who have stopped sleep paralysis using the methods described by the author.

Demons and Secular Science

Materialists contradict themselves by claiming that there is no God, spirits, or anything supernatural, and then they try to explain the soul and their version of free will (which is impossible from an evolutionary worldview). Ironically, atheists have their own miracles of sorts, but they deny God.

Sure, we see some self-styled ghost hunters on television attempting to obtain electromagnetic, infrared, and other readings of supposedly haunted places. Those do not amount to much. Can secularists ride the trail and scientifically study demons, which they believe do not exist? Kind of difficult with their materialistic presuppositions and bad logic, such as, "Since there are some fakers, there are no spirits at all". I can show you some angry atheopaths that have blasphemed each person of the Trinity, and are demonically possessed.

"What does a demon look like, Cowboy Bob?"

Whatever it thinks will be the most influential, and not in red pajamas with horns and a pitchfork! I heard a story about demons that took the forms of the rock stars in the group Kiss, because that was someone's focus in life. Others can be the stuff of movies, with fangs and glowing eyes. What I think is worse is that they can be beautiful, like their master (2 Corinthians 11:14, Ezekiel 28:17). Despite all this, I fully believe that most people will not actually see a demon or angel.

Studying demons and angels can be fascinating and even helpful, but Satan likes a couple of things. One is for people to believe that he does not exist. Another is for people to become so obsessed with studies of angels and demons, they drift away from their Creator who gave them life. Those who have had demonic activities, whether through direct occult involvement or demons pretending to be can test the spirits: "Who is Jesus Christ?" (1 John 4:1-3)

Return of the Nephilim

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12).

Whether or not we want to admit it, earth’s been invaded by an element of malevolent, supernatural, other dimensional beings. The paranormal is in full swing. The fight is raging and humanity is the prize. The battle has now moved into our four dimensional space/time continuum and still people ignore it or write it off as silly science fiction nonsense. Yet science fiction often has a foundation based on fact. Earth’s inhabitants are in for a measure of the paranormal unparalleled in the last 4,000 years.

Currently Satan, his hoard of fallen angels, and the demons of old are poised on the brink of facilitating the most startling phenomenon the world will ever witness; the Bible calls it a “strong delusion”. The race is on; it’s a race against time itself.

Satan has an agenda which includes a massive amount of deception and a bit of public exposure to pique the interest of a few, yet maintaining his agenda in the realm of science fiction for the moment. In the meantime scary things are happening – the appearance of ghosts/demons, “space” aliens, unexplained animal mutilations, etc. All of these weird occurrences are burgeoning. The world is moving into chilling, unexplored territory. Yet people seem to have no fear of the aforementioned occurrences. Why is that? Because we’ve been desensitized through some entertaining Hollywood movies, and the exploitation of the paranormal.

Make no mistake these fallen angels are currently continuing their shenanigans as they corrupt the last day’s human race. The bringing forth of the hybrids (Nephilim) into our midst has begun.

These fallen angels, through whatever means at their disposal, brought a mass of hybrid beings onto this planet with one goal in mind: to create a soulless and pure evil human hybrid – to replace all who are made in God’s image. Their success would have eliminated any chance of a forthcoming Messiah. Our Messiah arrived precisely when He was supposed to which tells they were not successful. Satan has, once again, begun his dastardly deeds with another assault on mankind.

Hate Speech: Christian Doctor David Mackereth in UK Fired and Deemed ‘Unfit to Work for Crime of Saying Gender is Determined at Birth'

By Geoffrey Grider
For 6,000 years of human history, no one has ever disputed the fact that there are only 2 biological genders of human beings. One is male, and the other is female, and for 6,000 years that’s the way it’s been. The Bible itself bears witness to the fact that God created only 2 genders, one male and the other female. Cased closed, right? Wrong.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Genesis 1:27 [KJV]).

The attack on our values, the Bible, our freedoms, common sense and even logic by the LGBTQ Movement across the world seemingly knows no bounds. Today we bring you the case of Dr. David Mackereth from the UK, who has dared to declared that there are only 2 genders when a person is born.

Vatican Astronomers Ramp up Their Search for “Brother Extraterrestrial”

Vatican astronomers have reportedly been working towards locating extraterrestrial life. Earlier in March, the Vatican Observatory cosponsored a major conference on extraterrestrial life that brought together 200 of the leading astrobiologists in the world.

One of the organizers stated that one of the goals of the conference was to figure out “how we can find life among the stars within the next two decades.” Some high profile Vatican astronomers seem quite confident that “something” is out there.

The question that comes to mind is why this level of interest from the Vatican: Is there something they know that the general public isn’t aware of? Why are they taking a lead role in areas that are not within the traditional Catholic scope or domain?

José Gabriel Funes, an Argentine Jesuit priest and astronomer, and the current director of the Vatican Observatory says there is no conflict between believing in God and in the possibility of extraterrestrial civilizations perhaps more evolved than humans: “Just as there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth, there can be other beings, even intelligent, created by God. This is not in contrast with our faith because we can’t put limits on God’s creative freedom.

"Why can’t we speak of a ‘brother extraterrestrial’? It would still be part of creation… There could be other beings 'who remained in full friendship with their creator.'” Another prominent Vatican astronomer, Guy Consolmagno, has publicly suggested that aliens could actually be the 'saviors of humankind.'
